Posted by Jacqui on 2nd September 2024

LOCAL HEROES

A trusted partner of the OU from the early 1990s – Visual Identity has played an important role in supporting the OU and delivering many production projects – particularly in large document production. Since its inception in 1969, The Open University (OU) has been a beacon of innovative, flexible, and accessible education. With over 200,000 students, the OU’s commitment to providing high-quality learning experiences and global reach is nothing short of legendary. This is a testament to its educational prowess. But also to the meticulous behind-the-scenes operations that ensure consistent, brand-aligned communication across all its platforms.

“The Open University is an extraordinary institution, a beacon of hope for those seeking to transform their lives through education.”

The OU is the UK’s largest provider of graduate and business studies which necessitates the production of a vast number of tailored materials for prospective students. Our project work, highlighted in the case study below, and commissioned over the last three decades, has ensured that the materials are always produced and delivered consistently and reflect the OU’s prestigious reputation in the field.

Just as the OU has revolutionised higher education – VI has had much experience of delivering large document production. As a valued supplier to the OU, this is a key requirement for this client. From creating visually compelling large prospectuses to designing extensive document packs and folder containers. Over time, our collaboration showcases the importance of working with suppliers who understand why robust, consistent brand identity is paramount.

The complexity of producing documents for an institution like The Open University is comparable to running a major educational programme. Each project requires a deep understanding of the university’s brand values, audience needs, and technical requirements. Whether it’s a course catalogue, prospectus, promotional leaflet, or website landing page.

Case Study: The Open University
Excellence in large document and prospectus production across three decades

For over 30 years, Visual Identity (VI) has been the driving force behind the production of educational materials. This is a testament to our commitment to design excellence and precision. From the early 1990s, we’ve seamlessly evolved these publications alongside the OU’s brand, mastering both print and digital formats.

In an age dominated by digital content, the tangible impact of print remains undeniable. 70% of people find print more personal and trustworthy. While 82% of students rely on printed prospectuses for decision-making.

John Naisbitt said, “We are drowning in information but starved for knowledge.” Underscoring the value of well-crafted print materials.

Branding and messaging consistency

One of the key challenges in large document production is maintaining consistency in branding and messaging across various mediums. The Open University’s vast array of materials – ranging from print to digital. Yet it’s the demand for a cohesive visual identity that resonates with its diverse audience. Visual Identity ensures this through meticulous design and a deep understanding of the OU’s core message of ‘Learn and Live.’

Importance is given the OU’s cultural impact. Having been featured in popular TV shows such as The Archers and Brookside. High-profile media exposure requires every piece of OU-branded material. Especially when it features on-screen or off-, to must align with the university’s established identity – something VI excels at!

Our extensive experience working with higher education institutions has enabled us to seamlessly integrate the OU’s branding into every project. Whether it’s a new student prospectus or an international marketing campaign, our designs are always on-brand. We ensure that every piece of communication reinforces the OU’s reputation for excellence and accessibility.

Enhancing flexibility and adaptability in large document production

The OU’s success is largely due to its flexible learning model which allows students to tailor their education to their unique needs. Similarly, our approach to document production is highly adaptable. We have created custom templates and workflows that accommodate the changing needs of the OU. As well as ensuring that all materials meet their strict brand guidelines.

Given that nearly three-quarters of the OU’s students are at work while they study, the document production is designed to be as accessible and inclusive as possible. We ensure that materials are updated and relevant to current accessibility standards. This is to support the students who are balancing their studies with their professional commitments.

An example is when the OU launched a new course offering. As part of our delivery, we adapt existing templates to produce updated brochures that are both informative and visually engaging. Our ability to scale up or down based on project requirements has been instrumental in meeting the OU’s dynamic needs.

SEO and content marketing strategies for large document production

Just as the OU has embraced online learning. Visual Identity has ensured that every piece of content we produce is optimised for search engines. Incorporating relevant keywords helps boost the OU’s online presence – making it easier for prospective students to find what they need. In today’s digital age, visibility is key.

Employers and organisations worldwide understand that an OU degree signifies a high academic standard. By making the optimisation and content easy to reach and accessible, it reaches a diverse and global audience.

Moreover, our content marketing strategies are designed to engage and inform. By highlighting the benefits of OU’s programmes and the success stories of its graduates, we’ve created compelling narratives that resonate with potential students and stakeholders alike.

Leveraging our experience in large document production

Our long-standing partnership with The Open University is a testament to our expertise in working with educational institutions. Over the years, we’ve developed a deep understanding of the unique challenges faced by universities and colleges. This experience allows us to offer tailored solutions that not only meet but exceed expectations.

When collaborating with the OU, we consider their extensive use of distance learning methodologies. This influences our design solutions for print and digital materials. In this, we ensure these are accessible and engaging for a student body that primarily studies engage with the organisation online.

In a recent project, we collaborated with the OU to redesign their course registration platform. The goal was to create a user-friendly interface that streamlined the registration process while maintaining the university’s distinct branding. The result was a significant increase in online registrations and positive feedback from both students and staff.

The Learning Around You Programme

The Open University launched the “Learning Around You” project. Formerly known as “Bringing Learning to Life,” to improve access to essential Maths and English skills for adult learners. This initiative, supported by the Flexible Learning Fund, aimed to overcome barriers such as early school dropout, and negative influences. It is a lack of qualifications that often prevents individuals from reaching their full potential. In partnership with Watford, Bedford, and Newcastle colleges, the programme utilised the OU’s OpenLearn platform. The project provided flexible learning options tailored to diverse learner groups.

Visual Identity has played an important role in various projects developing a cohesive brand. We created impactful marketing assets and organised the bespoke photoshoot. We also built a user-friendly website to serve as a central hub for resources. This successful collaboration resulted in significant learner engagement. Additionally, positioned the project as a scalable model for adult education across the UK rollout.
